When the sky is ablaze
All the thrills of the mountains
Sunsets are often associated to lovers. Yet they are one of nature’s most democratic phenomena: they occur every day and are accessible to anyone willing to look up for a moment. And to hike to one or two spots where the spectacle is particularly beautiful to behold.
Shortly before the sun disappears behind the peaks of the Surselva region, the air changes noticeably. The colours gain depth, and the present moment condenses into a single instant. Psychologists describe this state as “awe”: a form of deep reverence that calms the mind and intensifies the experience.
From Hotel La Val, you’ll find our favourite spots for watching the sunset.
Here are our top 5.
- 1. Flanz viewpoint
On the hiking trail to Kropfenstein Castle, above Brigels. A signposted viewpoint with views over the valley and the rock faces. Elevated position, easily reached on foot.
- Kropfenstein Castle
Dramatic 14th-century rock castle ruins, clinging to the rock face like an eagle’s nest. A short, well-marked hiking trail from Brigels. Spectacular views across the Rhine valley.
- Brigels Panorama Golf Course (1,300m)
9-hole course with open panoramic views, looking out towards Mt Péz Tumpiv and Mt Brigelserhörner to the north and the Signina mountain range to the south. Golfing in the sunset? Magical.
- Alp Dado (1,820m)
Accessible by chairlift or in approx. 35 minutes on foot. Large, sheltered sun terrace with panoramic views. Open daily in summer from the end of June (La Famusa, valley station). Accessible via a hiking trail in June.
- The sun terrace at La Val Hotel & Spa
The hotel terrace is situated on the sun-drenched high plateau of Brigels (1,289m) with unobstructed panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The most comfortable spot for an evening out, complete with a wine list.
